The School of Environment of Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) has a long history and a legacy of heritage. In 1920, Harbin Sino-Russian Industrial School (the early name of Harbin Institute of Technology) established the Department of Railway Construction, which offered specialized courses such as “Water Supply and Drainage”. In 1925, the Department of Railway Construction and Design set up a Teaching and Research Section of Water Supply and Drainage. In 1950, Harbin Institute of Technology founded the major of Sanitary Engineering; in 1952, the major of Sanitary Engineering was split into two majors: Water Supply and Drainage, and Heating and Ventilation.
